Saturday in Duluth

So there were some of my favorite pictures that we took at the Glensheen mansion after the test today. For those of you not from around here, Glensheen is in Duluth, MN, which is just across the bay from Superior, WI, which is where I took the test (at UW Superior). The weather was quite nice for being so far north. You couldn’t take pictures inside, hence all the outdoor pictures. But, take my word, it is a beautiful house. It cost almost a million dollars, not counting the furnishings, to build way back in 1904. I think he said it would cost 20 million to build it today. Something enormous, anyway. And the furnishings are pretty much as impressive. It was fun to see how the other half lives — or lived, actually.

What fun pictures! What was that tunnel coming out of the hill?

Apparently there are two “man-made” creeks, one on either side of the house. I’m not sure what was involved in “man-making” them, but they must have cut through that hill and the picture shows where it comes through just on the edge of the lawn. I just thought it was so pretty for something so ordinary as a little creek! both creeks empty into Lake Superior. You can’t see that, but the lawn looks out on the lake, probably about 100 yards away.

The three pictures of the house exterior are on the lake side of the house. I thought it was interesting that she didn’t want anyone to have to come in a “back” door, so she has two “front” doors, one facing the lake, where you arrive if you came by boat, and one facing the driveway where you would arrive if you came by carriage (and later by car.) So the whole center section of the house is basically a foyer and the stairways going up or down. It is a lot of space for just coming in or going out, because it is the entire width of the house.
